As part of the offer of Galerija Jakšić, recognised as a leading art gallery on the island of Brač and an art gallery in Split, we present new works by sculptor Lovre Jakšić – an artist whose visual expression is deeply rooted in the tradition of stone carving, yet distinctly contemporary and authorial.
Lovre Jakšić belongs to a generation of artists who continue a rich family heritage while developing it in their own direction. His stone sculptures emerge from a direct dialogue with the material – most often white Brač stone, one of the most valued natural materials in sculpture and architecture. Through his work, Lovre explores the relationship between volume, light, and texture, creating pieces that are both powerful and refined.
His recognisable artistic language is based on stylised human figures, portraits, and forms in various poses. The body is reduced to essential shapes, yet retains a strong emotional and aesthetic presence. A defining quality of his sculptures lies in the play of light and shadow, achieved through the contrast between smoothly polished surfaces and roughly worked stone. This interplay of textures creates movement and emphasises the natural structure of the material.
The presented works reveal figures emerging from the stone – torsos with a sense of movement, elongated female forms, and fragmented portraits. In some sculptures, the surface is almost entirely polished, reflecting light and accentuating the line of the body, while in others, rough-hewn areas remain as a reminder of the material’s raw strength. This balance between the refined and the raw gives each piece authenticity and character.
Most of these sculptures are exhibited in our gallery in Donji Humac on the island of Brač, which is also our first and largest gallery space. Thanks to its scale, it allows us to present larger works and offer visitors a complete spatial experience of sculpture. The gallery on Brač has become an essential destination for visitors who wish to experience authentic art, discover the tradition of stone craftsmanship, and feel the unique atmosphere created by the fusion of nature, material, and artistic expression.
A smaller selection of works is also available in our art gallery in Split, where visitors can experience these sculptures within an urban setting.
As part of the contemporary landscape of art galleries in Croatia, Galerija Jakšić and our workshop continuously cultivate the connection between tradition and contemporary artistic expression. The stone sculptures of Lovre Jakšić, together with works by Dina Jakšić Pavasović, Ida Stipčić Jakšić, and Dražen Jakšić, represent a powerful example of the unique relationship between human, stone, and space – and their works are exhibited in the Jakšić galleries.
