When fine wines, original design, and Brač stone come together, the result is a unique stone design solution that goes far beyond its basic function. Such was the case with this project created for Pumparela Restaurant in Bol on the island of Brač, where our stonemasonry workshop designed and produced a distinctive wine display wall that serves both as an artistic installation and a functional wine rack.
The goal was to create a feature that would immediately capture the attention of guests upon arrival while presenting the restaurant’s carefully curated wine selection. Rather than opting for conventional shelving or wine racks, we designed an original composition crafted from Brač stone that blends seamlessly with the restaurant’s authentic stone architecture. The wall is formed from a rhythmic arrangement of curved stone panels that open towards the viewer, creating a sense of movement and lightness despite the strength and solidity of the material.
Each bottle of wine is given its own dedicated space within the composition, highlighting its individuality and quality. Specially designed lighting further emphasises the bottles, creating the impression that the wines emerge directly from the stone structure. Informative stone elements featuring descriptions of grape varieties, aromas, and tasting notes accompany each bottle, transforming the installation into an engaging and educational wine presentation. Guests are introduced to the restaurant’s wine selection before even taking their seats, while the display wall itself becomes a memorable visual landmark.
This project demonstrates how Brač stone can serve as a contemporary medium for shaping architectural spaces. Although traditionally associated with architecture and heritage, its aesthetic and technical qualities make it ideal for innovative interior design and exterior design projects for restaurants, hotels, wineries, and hospitality venues. Thanks to its durability, natural beauty, and timeless character, Brač stone is the perfect material for projects seeking to combine functionality, elegance, and the authentic spirit of the Mediterranean.
To further connect the installation with its surroundings, a custom-designed stone bench was placed in front of the wall. Its soft, flowing lines echo the forms of the display structure, creating a harmonious composition that invites guests to pause, observe, and take photographs. Together, the wall and bench form a unique installation that combines architecture, design, and wine culture into a cohesive whole.
The Pumparela project is an excellent example of how stone design solutions can enrich a space, strengthen its identity, and create a lasting impression on visitors. Crafted from Brač stone, this unique wine rack is not merely a functional element but a distinctive design feature that defines the character of the venue. This bespoke project is just one of many custom-made solutions developed by Jakšić Gallery and the Jakšić Stonemasonry Workshop. Over decades of work, we have designed and created numerous unique stone elements for hotels, villas, restaurants, public spaces, and private investors, proving that Brač stone can be as functional as it is artistically expressive. Every project is conceived as a response to a specific space and the individual needs of the client, transforming stone into a one-of-a-kind work that brings together design, architecture, and master craftsmanship.
